Allmansrätten
I will be in Stockholm for my 6-week practicum in the Spring and aim to get plenty of hiking in and around the city. This post will focus on day hikes from the city that can be reached by public transport. I’ll take a look at walking in Stockholm itself in a separate post.
Swedes love being outdoors, and everyone has the right to roam freely in nature under the principle of “Allmansrätten.”
“The Right of Public Access”, or ‘Allemansrätten’ as we call it, gives everyone the freedom to roam and explore the beauty of Sweden. A unique right where the only thing you have to pay, is respect for nature and the animals living there.

Hiking Trails
There are four major hiking trails in the Stockholm area, each divided into legs that can be tackled individually. They are:
- Sörmlandsleden (1000 km)
- The Stockholm Archipelago Trail (270km)
- Roslagsleden (190 km)
- Upplandsleden (500km)
Each of these hiking trails has a dedicated website, detailing each leg, including length, difficulty, public transport options, and lots more. I’m particularly interested in Sörmlandsleden, which starts in the Nacka District, where we will be living.

The first few sections of this epic trail are within easy reach by public transport. There is even lake swimming if the weather warms up enough!

Nature Reserves
Sweden has thousands of nature reserves and national parks, 207 of which are in Stockholm County. The AirBNB where I will be staying practically backs onto one of these, Nyckelviken, so I’m keen to learn more about this one.
Nacka municipality’s website has information about Nyckelviken, starting with this summary:
A large stand of old oaks makes Nyckelviken nature reserve on Sicklaön unique. Meadows spread out between the lush groves of trees. The 18th-century buildings are well preserved and remnants of older agricultural landscapes make the reserve a valuable cultural environment.

The historic buildings and gardens look like a lovely place for an evening stroll:
Or there are a couple of hiking loops on AllTrails that avoid the attractions: the Nyckelviken Blå spåret and the Sjönära motionsspår. It will be great having these trails just a stones throw away.
And a Few More…
I really liked this article, which details 6 different day hikes outside Stockholm, each easily accessible by public transport.
So much to explore! And I’m looking forward to hiking in Europe again, where I won’t have to keep half an eye open for bears or cougars…
