iMovie & Audacity to follow…

Rich McCue from UVic’s Digital Scholarship Commons was a guest speaker this week. I was unaware of this group within the McPherson library and ended up spending most of the lesson diving into their website rather than getting on with the workshop tasks (I will get caught up!). The purpose of the Digital Scholarship Commons is stated on their homepage:

We assist UVic students, faculty, and staff in learning digital tools and methodologies to help them pursue their passions and tell their research stories in engaging ways, in a welcoming, equitable, and diverse environment. We do this by offering workshops and one-on-one consultations for various software, tools (such as 3D printers, laser cutters, electronics), and more.

I browsed through the workshops on offer and signed up for Web Based Edu Games with H5P and Infographics on Canva. Their list of online courses is also really impressive, and all are released under a Creative Commons License so can be used freely all over the world. What a great example of knowledge sharing!

Once I finally got onto the Video Editing course, I ended up taking a step backwards from where Rich had started with the class, working through the pre-workshop activities to suit my methodical way of learning. There was some advice on upping your photo and video taking game, and this video had some great tips:

Unfortunately the tips came too late for this video of my dogs goofing around on snow day last week, but I airdropped it to my Mac and uploaded it to this page, which I’ll take as a win:

I’ll use this video in the Video editing course, when I get caught up later this weekend.

Overall, I’m looking forward to working on these new skills and to the possibilities they will open up within the classroom!
